Vitamins and Minerals

I hope that you had a great weekend despite the weather. I had to take a trip to Central Michigan and it was warmer there than it was here in Quincy. The first part of the trip was traveling in whiteout conditions and not being able to see the road until we got to Pittsfield and then not bad from there on. The weather can be a stress not only because of the cold temperatures and being stuck inside but when trying to travel and the conditions on the roads. The stress can lead to nutritional deficiencies as the body is using more of its stores to handle these stresses.             Our topic for tonight’s health shop is vitamins and minerals. We’ll be talking about where they come from and how the body can absorb them, two topics you never hear about on mainstream media advertising. For example, the Ensure product has artificial vitamins and minerals that come from rock sources and are basically unusable for nutrition, and is full of sugar, just with people in nursing

Will adjustments make my spine too loose?

·          Will adjustments make my spine too loose?           Putting the vertebra back in place and getting the ligaments to hold the vertebra in correct position actually helps the spine to tighten and strengthen. If a person has spinal subluxations, or misalignment , it means that the ligaments are already loose and are allowing the vertebra to move to far or misalign and get stuck out of place. This misalignment causes joint inflammation and disc height reduction which can then cause the resultant spinal nerve pinching or irritation. The chiropractic adjustment helps to restore normal nerve function by realigning the vertebra and getting the ligaments to strengthen. There may be a need for nutritional support as well is this may be the reason why the ligaments have weakened in the first place.

Nervous System 101

Nervous System 101 Something that’s great for your nervous system? Plenty of exercise and water! The nervous system in your body is made up of two parts: the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. The brain and the spinal cord make up the central nervous system. The spinal cord transmits sensory messages to the brain and motor messages from the brain. Sensory nerves carry messages from receptors to the brain. If you touch a hot stove, pain receptors tell your brain to move your hand. Motor nerves send signals from the brain to the muscles in the body. These nerves help us to do things, like walk, kick a ball or pick up an object. The peripheral nervous system transports the messages between the central nervous system and the body. It consists of cranial and spinal nerves that carry messages to and from every cell in your body. The Autonomic Nervous System Part of the peripheral nervous system is called the autonomic nervous system. The actions of the

The Brain in Your Gut

Did you know you have a ‘second brain’ in your gut? It surprises many to learn that they have an enteric nervous system. Have you heard of it? It controls and regulates the esophagus, stomach, small intestine and colon and has five times the number of neurons as your spinal cord. You’ve probably heard the admonition “trust your gut.” Turns out it’s wise advice. If you’ve ever felt butterflies in your stomach, felt a hunch or sensed that the crab cakes were a bit “funky,” you may have heard from your “second brain.” In your gut. Have you ever vomited? Then you’ve experienced the wisdom of your enteric nervous system firsthand. You may not have felt well, but the intelligence of your nervous system caused those funky crab cakes to become projectiles, producing the contractions necessary to force them back up your esophagus. A healthy response even though you didn’t feel well. The enteric nervous system is thought to play a major role in our emotional well–being, too. It

What Causes Muscle Spasms?

What Causes Muscle Spasms?                         There are several main causes of muscle spasm that we check for at Natural Health. And of course were talking about any type of muscle spasm, Charlie horse, shin splint, or just plain old muscle cramp. There are many causes of these overactive muscles and some of them are there for a specific purpose.             Let’s start with muscle spasms due to nerve pinching from a subluxated spinal segment. On the surface it may seem like this is an aberrant phenomenon but is actually there to help stabilize the spinal area so that the nerve is not further damaged. These are normally in the spinal areas but could be affecting any of the muscles in the extremities as well. For instance a rotator cuff irritation may be coming from a spinal nerve irritation in the mid-part of the back which controls the muscles of the scapula which make up the rotator cuff. It’s important to remove this nerve interference so not only the muscle works corre

The Benefits of a Cyclical Ketogenic Diet

The Benefits of a Cyclical Ketogenic Diet The MMT diet is a cyclical  ketogenic diet , high in healthy fats and fiber, low in net carbs with a moderate amount of protein. Nutritional ketosis is the metabolic state associated with an increased production of ketones in your liver; i.e., the biological reflection of being able to burn fat, and is defined as having blood ketones in the range of 0.5 to 3.0 mmol/L. However, a key component that differentiates MMT from most other ketogenic eating plans is its emphasis on CYCLICAL ketosis. Once your body starts to burn fat for fuel, you need to switch to a cyclical ketogenic diet, as long-term continuous ketosis has some serious drawbacks that may actually undermine your health and longevity. The "metabolic magic" in the mitochondria actually occurs during the refeeding phase, not during the starvation phase. Alas, you cannot get to that magic unless you first go through the starvation phase. This is why we refer to the MMT p

Did you know? Regular chiropractic care is ideal to help retrain muscles that are susceptible to injury.

Did you know? Regular chiropractic care is ideal to help retrain muscles that are susceptible to injury. Probably one of the greatest myths about chiropractic care is that, once you go, you have to go for the rest of your life. Of course, this isn’t true. However, we do have patients who plan to see us regularly for the rest of their life. So what gives? Five Ways to Use Chiropractic The most common reasons patients choose ongoing chiropractic care include: Relief  – Many people begin here. Their ache, pain or other symptom is often what prompts them to begin chiropractic care. Correction  – With the most obvious symptoms reduced, many opt to continue their care to stabilize and strengthen their spine. Maintenance  – Regular chiropractic care can help you maintain your progress and avoid a relapse. Prevention  – Periodic chiropractic checkups can help catch new problems early. Wellness  – Simply put, we experience life through our nervous system. That’s why

Does removing sugar from your diet starve cancer cells?

Does removing sugar from your diet starve cancer cells? New study finds surprising answers Sunday, July 22, 2018 by:  Ralph Flores ( Natural News ) Cutting back on sugar  may help decrease your likelihood of getting certain cancers , a recent study noted. The finding, which was part of an investigation made by researchers from  Duke-NUS Medical School  and the  National University of Singapore , together with the  Duke University School of Medicine  and the  Medical University of Vienna , is part of a unique approach explaining how reducing sugar can cause cancer cells to die. The paper, which was published in the online journal  Science Signaling,  presented a  novel cell death pathway  through introducing how depriving cancer cells of sugar can trigger a reaction that causes them to die. This research builds on earlier scientific literature that indicates that cancer cells that quickly multiply need higher levels of sugar than healthy cells. (Related:  More Evidence that Suga

Here are 5 proven ways to reduce or eliminate bloating.

Here are 5 proven ways to reduce or eliminate bloating. 1.  People who experience bloating often have increased sensitivity to food in the stomach. Therefore, eating smaller meals can be very useful. 2.  Food allergies and intolerances are common causes of bloating. Common offenders include lactose, fructose, wheat, gluten and eggs. 3.  Swallowed air can contribute to bloating. A major cause is drinking carbonated beverages, which contain gases that are dissolved in the liquid. 4.  If certain foods make you feel bloated or give you gas, try cutting back or avoiding them. Eating fatty foods can also slow digestion and may  contribute to bloating  for some people. 5.  Probiotic supplements can help improve the bacterial environment in the gut, which can help reduce symptoms of  gas and bloating . If you have chronic bloating that causes severe problems in your life, or becomes a lot worse all of a sudden, definitely call and make your appointment to get your Initial Nutrition Consultati

3 reasons you should NEVER eat wheat -- Yes, even "whole wheat

The 3 reasons you should NEVER eat wheat -- Yes, even "whole wheat" There are 3 main reasons why wheat is a terrible food for your body and does more harm than good... Reason #1 -- Wheat causes blood sugar disruption, Glycation of your cells, increases AGING, weight gain & boosts Diabetes risk Before I tell you why wheat can actually speed up the aging process in your body, let's clarify some simple biochemistry in your body... This deals with "glycation" in your body, and substances called  Advanced Glycation End Products  (AGEs). These nasty little compounds called AGEs  speed up the aging process  in your body including damage over time to your organs, your joints, and of course, wrinkled skin. So with that said, what is one of the biggest factors that increase production of AGEs inside your body? This may surprise you, but  high blood sugar levels  over time dramatically increase age-accelerating AGEs in your body. This is why type 2 diab

What is normal Blood Pressure?

What is normal Blood Pressure?             For all the years of my professional career, the normal blood pressure number that we’ve known about is 120/80. To be clear, this number was meant to be the average of the population. This means that some people’s normal blood pressure could be 150/90, and some people’s normal blood pressure could be 100/60. The thing to remember about blood pressure is that it is meant to be taken in a resting state. This means that you can’t rush into your doctor’s office after waiting for 2 hours in the waiting room, and being upset, have your blood pressure taken and it’s higher than 120/80, and then being told you have high blood pressure. A person needs to be in a resting position for at least 10 minutes without any stimulating stressors on the body, like coffee or caffeinated drinks or watching the news, and then have the blood pressure taken in both arms and see what the number is. Then do the same thing over the course of a period of time an ave

How to lower Cholesterol?

How to lower Cholesterol?             To learn how to lower your cholesterol, we first must have a discussion about what cholesterol is and does. Cholesterol is in all the cell membranes in your body, your brain is 60 to 80% cholesterol by weight, but in your bloodstream it is a transfer molecule moving triglycerides from the liver to the fat cells for storage, or from the fat cells to the liver to be used for energy production. Only about 5% of the cholesterol that gets into your body comes from the diet, the rest is all made by the liver for the purposes mentioned above. The problem with cholesterol comes when the body uses it to repair the damage in the arteries that comes from the use of refined sugar. The increased sugar consumption causes insulin spikes and the resulting inflammation deteriorates the lining of the arteries. With more inflammation, the body uses more cholesterol to patch it up and this causes the plaque, that if a piece breaks off and gets in the wrong place

Why am I so tired?

Why am I so tired?             Tiredness can be interpreted many ways and is a symptom of the bodies underlying problems of energy production, or lack thereof.   In the natural healing world, we look to find the cause of that particular person’s tiredness or fatigue. There can be many causes and we work with the principal that anything can cause anything. It is so important to find the underlying cause as just using products to force the body to have more energy can actually cause more problems and deepen the condition and lead to worse disease processes.   We are always going to look at diet and lifestyle and try to improve those to reduce the stress that the body is under which gives the body more energy far living well. Several common causes of tiredness and fatigue that we see in our office would include an underactive thyroid, heavy metal toxicity, underlying infectious processes that the body can’t completely get rid of, food allergies, depression and anxiety, and man

Where Is Your Health?

Where Is My Health? Knowing where to look is the fastest way to find something. We help so many people recover their health because we know where to look. One of the key tenets of chiropractic is that health is our natural state. When someone isn’t healthy, we look for what could be interfering with this natural ability by looking for the underlying cause of the symptom. Typically, we find a disturbance in the controlling or regulating impulses of the nervous system, producing a myriad of conditions that go by thousands of different names. The most common source of compromise in this brain/body communication is from the moving bones of the spine. Headaches? Look to the spine. Acid reflux? Look to the spine. Inflamed tonsils? Look to the spine. Asthma? You get the idea. Does that mean chiropractic can cure everything? Of course not. But to regain your health, it’s a great place to start looking! What causes Kidney Stones?

What causes Kidney Stones? Kidney stones are normally very painful so folks that have had them, want to never have them again.  Kidney stones are symptom of an underlying issue and can have many causes. In the natural healing world, we feel that anything can cause anything so the cause must be looked at very individually.  The kidney stone itself is a uric acid deposit, coming from improper protein metabolism and drainage issues in the kidney. A simple cause of kidney stones can be dehydration, lack of drinking good quality water and getting mineral or sea salt to help the kidneys work correctly.  Incomplete digestion of proteins or mal-absorption of nutrients necessary for complete digestion of proteins indicates a digestive or intestinal problem. Toxic liver and an overloaded lymphatic system can also trigger kidney stones as this over works the kidneys.  Subluxation of the mid thoracic vertebra with reduction of nerve flow to the kidneys reducing correct kidney function

What causes Hiccups?

What causes Hiccups? As you may or may not realize, hiccups are symptom due to a spasm in the diaphragm. In the world of natural healing, we feel that anything can cause anything.  There must be some trigger though, for that individual to have the hiccups. This could be due to food allergies, indigestion and bloating, excitement, stress or other emotions, and subluxation in the cervical spine. The nerves that come from the spine at the C4 spinal level innervate the diaphragm.  We have had very good success in stopping hiccups by adjusting the upper cervical spine, especially the C4 area if it is subluxated. The T6 spinal level is involved with digestion and adjusting this area can also alleviate digestive problems that can stop the hiccups.  We have also found that using nutritional supplements to help with digestion, i.e. enzymes and betaine hydrochloride, reduce the indigestion and bloating and help to alleviate the food allergies which could lead to the symptom of hiccups.
